In the Novel...
In Brave new world, conditioning plays a big part in their society. I’ve now learned a great deal about how human and animal conditioning works and how it enhances my understanding of the novel. Children in the novel get conditioned to hate or love things from a very young age. I’d never thought it would have this big of an impact if it hadn’t been researched this well.
Conditioning had been accidentally discovered by Ivan Pavlov. He discovered that when someone came towards his dogs with food, they’d began to salivate. This was nothing new however, but what he discovered next was that they also began to salivate when they only heard the sound of footsteps.
In Brave new world conditioning helps people stay inside of their own social and work classes. It makes the one class hate or dislike the other and love their own class. In the novel it could even decide what job someone could be practicing later in their life. While I do not think that is possible in real life for everyone, I must say that he probably has a point that it could happen. Conditioning is a very real thing and Huxley warns us against the dangers of it.
