In the novel...

In the world of A brave new world, social influence plays a very big part. A lot of different forms of influence can be recognised in the book. The foundation of the society, in A brave new world, is to influence people so much that it will seem like there is not even free choice. One way of influence in this book can be called fear conditioning, for example the scene with the children that are shown flowers and shocked after to teach them that flowers are bad. Hypnosis is also a big thing in the book, for example sleep teaching. The children would listen to a voice telling them that they are better than the caste below them, and that they should be happy to not be as smart as the caste above them, because if they were they would have to work much harder. In my research I found that there are two extremes of influence. You have the educational type and you have the indoctrination type. In A brave new world, you will almost solely see indoctrination. Because of this indoctrination the originality of every individual is almost completely gone. Seeing how Huxley describes this dystopia it becomes clear that individuality is a very important factor in a good society.
